NWU triumphant in Zodwa Khoza Memorial Women’s Cup

The ladies soccer team of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark ended Women’s Month on a high note by winning the annual Zodwa Khoza Memorial Women’s Cup.

The tournament kicked off on National Women’s Day, and saw 10 senior teams and 13 under-17 teams competing for the spoils. The team from Vanderbijlpark took to the winner’s podium on Sunday, 26 August in Soweto.

NWU Vanderbijlpark’s road to glory included victories over DK Ladies (3-0), Peace Makers (2-0), Wits (3-2) and Blue Birds (2-1). The senior’s final between NWU and Blue Birds was a thrilling affair and was highly contested by both teams. The final score saw NWU clinching the tournament with a 4-2 win.

The final game, the highlight of the tournament, was attended by SAFA CEO, Dennis Mumble and the newly appointed Head of Women’s Football, Mapule Mogane.

* The Zodwa Khoza Memorial Women’s Cup is a tournament in remembrance of Dr Irvin Khoza’s daughter, Zodwa, who was the brand manager of Orlando Pirates. This tournament is planned and hosted in partnership with the Soweto Local Football Association.
