NWU Transformation Society to embark on gender-based violence and LGBTIQA+ awareness march

The Transformation Society on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbiljpark Campus will take to the streets, marching to raise awareness and educate the public on issues of gender-based violence, gender identity and sexual diversity in support of the LGBTIQA+ community.

Students and staff are invited to join in the march – themed “Rainbow Colours” – on 28 May from 12:00 to 16:00. The procession will start at the campus and proceed to Goodfellow’s Caramellows at the corner of Hendrick van Eck Boulevard and Andries Potgieter Street.

“Our goal is to let the NWU rainbow family know that the university is a home to everyone. It is a safe space, a place where you are free from being judged, and where open communication is encouraged and lasting relationships formed," says Lebo Maekela, the organisation's guardian and one of the march leaders.

Lebo adds that they also want to raise awareness of current issues the LGBTIQA+ community is facing.

“We want society to acknowledge us as people, and to connect with our community by creating a safe space for all.”

She urges participants to please adhere to all social distancing and health protocols and to wear masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“Anybody and everybody are welcome, and we welcome allies from outside the LGBTIQA+ community.  Please join us in celebration of love, diversity, acceptance and unashamed self-pride. Wear your rainbow colours, and most of all, come and join in the fun,” says Lebo.
