NWU students take national honours in risk management challenge

Students from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Risk Management programme at the Vanderbijlpark Campus have been crowned the 2026 Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) University Risk Management Challenge champions.

From finishing in the top three to being crowned national champions, these students have taken their success to the next level.

Competing as the True-North Assurance Group: NWU, the team put their knowledge and skills to the test against other universities, proving that they can take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to real-world challenges.

The team comprised Israle Mathebula, Sandile Shabangu, Michelline Gertsie, Lizwi Tshevu and Mutshinya Mulaudzi. Their victory marks a proud moment for the students, their programme and the university.

The challenge began on 31 May 2026, with the finalists presenting their work at the IRMSA Conference from 30 September to 1 October 2026. Held under the theme “#UmphakathiVuka”, the conference brought together professionals and emerging talent in risk management. The winners were announced at the conference gala dinner.

For the NWU, the victory is particularly special. After securing a top-three finish in 2025, the team returned this year and claimed the national title. The achievement reflects the students’ hard work, determination and growth throughout the competition.

The challenge required them to go beyond theory and tackle complex risk management scenarios. They had to identify and assess risks, analyse data, conduct research, consider governance and develop practical solutions. Strong teamwork, strategic thinking and the ability to communicate their ideas clearly were also essential.

Guiding the students throughout the journey was Daniel Mokatsanyane, a lecturer and programme leader in risk management on the Vanderbijlpark Campus, with support from the broader risk management team.

The mentorship focused on helping students turn their academic knowledge into practical, evidence-based solutions that could withstand scrutiny by industry professionals. It also gave them the opportunity to build the confidence and professional skills needed to navigate the world of work.

The team acknowledged Dr Fabian Moodley for his instrumental support in enabling them to attend the conference and represent NWU on this national platform. They also thanked Prof. Suné Ferreira-Schenk for her valuable feedback on their presentation.

Beyond the competition, attending the IRMSA Conference gave the students an opportunity to engage with industry leaders and gain insight into issues shaping the profession. Discussions highlighted the growing importance of governance and accountability, particularly as artificial intelligence and automation continue to reshape how organisations operate and manage risk.

The experience showed the value of combining academic learning with practical exposure and industry engagement. It also reflects the work being done by the risk management team at the Vanderbijlpark Campus to prepare students to think critically, communicate effectively and respond to an increasingly complex risk environment.

The NWU congratulates the team on this outstanding achievement and acknowledges Daniel and the risk management team for their guidance and support.
