NWU students stand up for animals

Chocolate, vanilla, caramel, blueberry: all the flavours imaginable! A group of BEd Foundation Phase students on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark took to the kitchen to promote their passion for animals.

The group of ladies, under the leadership of third-year student Monique Welgemoed, sold cupcakes on campus in a fundraising effort to support their local SPCA. This was the first effort of the group who hopes to start an initiative on campus that supports organisations that care for animals in the local community, such as the SPCA.

Early morning saw the students unpack nearly 400 cupcakes. The wonderful flavours and brightly decorated cupcakes soon drew a crowd of hungry students and sales went well. The ladies ended the day with an impressive profit of R1700!

The students spent their profit on 40 blankets and 120kg dry dog food that they delivered to the Vanderbijlpark SPCA that very afternoon. “Someone needs to stand up for the animals,” said a passionate Welgemoed. “They cannot speak for themselves.”

The group is planning another event early in the new semester. “We would like to establish a sustainable society that can keep up our efforts in support of animal care after we graduate in two years’ time,” said Welgemoed.
