Student midwives at the School of Nursing Science (SONS) at the North-West University (NWU) recently donated baby blankets to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the Klerksdorp Hospital.
Sr Ingrid van der Walt, lecturer at the SONS, says this was part of their community engagement project supporting developmental care of premature and ill babies admitted to the NICU.
The third-year BCur nursing students visited the hospital on 16 July to deliver the 86 baby blankets. They are currently being trained in midwifery.
The initiative came from Sr Lisa Springer, a professional nurse in the NICU at the hospital, who started the 2019 winter blanket drive for premature babies. The NWU students promptly reacted, and with the assistance of Sr Jennifer Griqua, a clinical facilitator at the NWU and advanced midwife, started to gather baby blankets.
Sr Van der Walt says they are proud of the initiative of the third-year students who opened their hearts to this initiative.
She also thanked the staff members of the Klerksdorp Hospital who support these students during their clinical training.
