Covid-19 is tightening its grip and those with the least financial means are feeling its stranglehold the most. Their plight is being heard. Students from the North-West University (NWU) again showed that – even in the face of a global pandemic – their commitment to helping the community is unwavering.
This is evident by the R50 000 donation and 7,5 tons of maize meal and canned food as well as several tons of clothing that were given to the JB Marks Disaster Relief Project. About 500 families rely on this fund and were in dire straits before the donation was made.
Student RAG Community Services (SRCS) on the campus in Potchefstroom was able to make this donation through their various year-long initiatives that include Canned Food Day and Barefoot Day. Annually, more than 400 students actively participate in more than 80 similar projects in the greater Potchefstroom area.
“These are difficult times that affect those in need the most. We are grateful for the continuous support we receive from the community that allows us to give back, to help and to show our gratitude for all that we receive,” says SRCS chairperson Ruandro Minnaar.
Prominent businesswoman and one of the project’s figureheads, Santi Britz, says she is overwhelmed by the donation and the dedication of all parties involved.
SRCS is the biggest student-driven charity organisation in the world and is celebrating 43 years of existence this year.
These SRCS team members are unwavering in their commitment to the NWU community.
