Students from the North-West University (NWU) recently attended the 8th University Scholars Leadership Symposium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The theme of the week-long symposium was “Building LIFE, Giving HOPE”, and more than 900 young emerging leaders from 78 United Nations member countries participated in this event.
The symposium, organised by Humanitarian Affairs Asia in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme for Social Development, focused on the development of young emerging leaders to bring about social change and finding solutions to existing problems facing the world.
The event brought together students from across the world and taught them about sustainable economic development, quality education, climate change and the alleviation of poverty.
“The general view is that a nation that does not invest in its youth is doomed,” said Siphosethu Mangele, one of the delegates.
“This symposium instilled a sense of social responsibility and cultivated the attributes of selfless giving among our emerging world leaders. We learnt about what it means to give back to the community, and to challenge ourselves to respond to the needy with works of kindness and unconditional service,” he added.
The NWU delegates comprised student leaders from all three campuses. They were accompanied by Dr Neo Morei, acting deputy executive dean of the Faculty of Law, and Ms Lerato Tsagae from the vice-chancellor’s office.
