The Student Chapter of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (FNAS) hosted a coin-laying fundraiser event on 7 September 2022.

The aim of this event was to lend a helping hand to those who are less fortunate, and the money that was collected will be used to purchase food, toiletries and non-perishable items for the Unathi Community Orphans’ Home in Mahikeng.

“We want to involve and encourage members of the Mahikeng Campus community to practice the spirit of Ubuntu, and to give back to the community by helping those who are less fortunate. We also want to make students aware that clothing and non-perishable items are not the only way to help someone in need,” says Tlotlo Mooki, secretary of the FNAS Student Chapter.  

She says they chose the Unathi orphanage because it houses and takes care of 96 children.

Gertrude Gobashe, chairperson of Unathi, informed them that the home is having problems with the truck that normally delivers food to them, and that their preferred items for donation would be groceries.  

“This event means a lot to the FNAS Student Chapter. We wanted to end our term with a programme or initiative that is community focused, and we managed to empower students to reach out to the community they are part of,” says Tlotlo.  

The members of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences’ Student Chapter want to make a difference.
