The North-West University’s (NWU’s) commitment to innovation is not only transforming the South African higher education landscape, but also the reach and impact of eSports. The latter referring to the ever-growing competitive gaming scene.
Just recently the university announced that it will be a headline sponsor for Mind Sport South Africa’s (MSSA) popular Online School League.
The league, which will now be known as the NWU MSSA Online School League, current boasts more than 60 affiliated school clubs and has come a long way since its inception nine years ago.
The sponsorship and collaboration with MSSA has presented the NWU with an inventive way to reach prospective students while at the same time adding value to the South African school sector in terms of the technological preparedness of learners.
The sponsorship will see to it that for the first time ever, the league will be in a position to offer members recognition other than just the traditional medals and provincial colours.
A bursary to the value of R30 000 has been made available for the winner of the StreetFighter V eSports title, while R10 000 prize money will be awarded to the School of the winner of the Paladins eSport title. Prize money to the value of R10 000 will also be awarded to the school for the winner of the DotA 2 esports title.
