Through their commitment to bring about positive social change, helping individuals of all ages thrive in their environment and being and advocate for those who have lost their voice, social workers continue to play a cardinal role as champions of care and empowerment.
With this in mind, the annual intercampus North-West University (NWU) Social Work Projects Day will take place on 12 November 2018 at the campus in Vanderbijlpark.
The aim of the event – which brings together staff and students from all three NWU campuses – is to grant final-year social work students the opportunity to present the work they did in different communities during their mandatory internship training.
The presentations will henceforth focus on community work interventions, case work and research projects. A panel of experts will evaluate each presentation and the impact it had on the respective communities.
According to Dr Elmien Truter, opportunities such as the annual projects day, offer social work students the unique opportunity to share their experiences in the field with their peers while also enabling them to build lasting networks.
“As rewarding as social work can be, the role comes with a fair amount of challenges,” says Dr Truter and adds that by sharing their experiences and encounters the students are being prepared for the world of work. She says that when students reflect on the impact of their contributions to a community, they also experience a sense of emotional satisfaction which serves as a motivator for continuing service and support to vulnerable groups.
