The North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute secured second place at this year’s University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament that took place at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) from 2 to 6 July 2018.
The road to the final for the Soccer Institute included a goalless draw with the University of Johannesburg, a 2-0 victory over the Central University of Technology and a 4-3 win against the University of the Free State. In the semi-final the team secured a 2-1 win over the University of the Western Cape.
In the end, our noble boys lost to the University of KwaZulu-Natal in a 4-2 stunner.
The NWU’s team manager, Mr Lawrence Mosala, also managed to bag the award for Team Manager of the Tournament.
“Our approach towards the tournament was to take one match at a time,” says club manager Vuyolwethu Sambo. “In the knockout stages we knew that we stood a chance to go all the way to the finals, and what I appreciate the most was the commitment from everyone in the team to push us to that level of the competition.”
“Even though we lost in the finals, we will accept defeat knowing that we have learned a lot. Next year we will go all the way with what we have learned,” he concludes.
