The North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute has been crowned champions of the North West Province ABC Motsepe League. As a result, the institute will represent the North West Province at the 2022 ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs.
The institute was declared the winner during the North West ABC league encounter with Orbit College FC after they played a 1-1 draw. The game was supposed to be decided on penalties, but Orbit wanted extra time, and as a result they abandoned the game.
The NWU were declared champions and were officially handed the trophy on 7 June 2022 in Mahikeng.
NWU Soccer Institute coach Karabo Masehela says it has not been an easy journey but his team always believed in themselves.
“We are excited about this new challenge. All that matters now is to prepare well, go out there and apply what God has given us,” says coach Karabo. “It is now or never. I urge the NWU community, the people of Mahikeng and the North West Province as a whole, to rally behind us on our way to the Glad Africa League.”
The 2022 ABC Motsepe National Playoffs will take place from 14 to 19 June 2022 at the NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus.
The draw for the round-robin fixtures was conducted at SAFA House on 6 May and three group stages are scheduled from 13 to 16 June.
The semi-finals will be played on 17 June at the Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom, and the final will be played at the same venue on 19 June. The champions of the day will walk away with R1 million in prize money, while the runners-up will receive R600 000.The two finalists will also be automatically promoted to the first division of South African football, and will take part in the 2022/2023 Glad African Championship.

The ABC Motsepe League is the current second division and overall third tier of South African football. The competition features 144 teams in total, divided into nine divisions located within the nine geo-political provinces of South Africa.
Each provincial division comprises 16 teams. The winner of each provincial division qualifies for the annual promotional playoffs, where they are divided into two streams. The winners of the two streams are then promoted to the national first division.
