NWU SisterHood Foundation launches Breast Cancer Awareness Day

According to statistics, every day one in 27 South African women is at risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. This particularly affects those between the ages of 15 and 60 as most women – especially those from disadvantaged rural areas – can’t afford mammograms.

This is why the North-University University’s (NWU’s) SisterHood Foundation, in partnership with Virgin Active and the Kealeboga Modimo Foundation, will celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Day by educating women about breast cancer risks, symptoms and prevention.

The event will take place on 8 October 2022 at Cachet Park in Potchefstroom.

Sello Kalaba, Sisterhood founder and health sciences student at the Potchefstroom Campus, says their aim with the programme is to create a platform to inform people of health issues such as breast cancer and mental health.

“We also strive to build relationships among women so that they can empower each other.”

Students and other stakeholders, including breast cancer survivors, are expected to go on a walk from 06:00 until 09:00 on Saturday morning in support of those who live with cancer.

Everybody is welcome to attend, and participants are asked to wear a pink t-shirt to show their support to those affected.

Sello says experts from Virgin Active will be guest speakers at the event. There will also be a fundraiser to help people living with cancer.

Anyone who is interested in supporting and joining the Sisterhood Foundation can send an email to Sisterhood04@gmail.com or WhatsApp 064 646 1361.
