Some people are born with charisma, some with good looks, and in the case of Fazlin Lahri, one doesn’t need to look far to see that she is a caring and loving soul.
Current and former students sing her praises and refer to Fazlin as family.
Fazlin, who is a residence officer for Hopeville residence on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, says her approach is best understood from the saying, “soft as a mother’s love”.
“Students, much like my own children, need someone who truly cares about them before they let their guard down and let anyone in. They need someone who truly makes them feel at home. I think this is why my approach to the students living in Hopeville bears fruit,” she shares.
Mother of three and wife to a police officer, Fazlin says the Lahri household is an eclectic mix of hyperactive children and their doting father which allows her to navigate different characters with ease – a skill she has had to rely on countless times in her work.
“A large number of former students still keep in touch or update me on their individual milestones, and that reminds me why I love my work.””
An avid fan of movies and series, Fazlin enjoys being at home with her loved ones when not opening her heart to students from all walks of life.
“I can’t imagine not doing the work I do. I enjoy the interaction with students, which perhaps speaks to my dream of being a teacher one day. This is a dream I have had for a long time, and I hope to one day reach more students and impact their lives for the better,” says Fazlin.
With over a decade at the helm of one of the most progressive residences on the Mahikeng Campus, Fazlin’s warm demeanor radiates as you enter the residence, and that is the unique way that one will experience the love that is synonymous with her.
Fazlin’s message for Women’s month is “Life is tough, my darling, but so are you.”
