NWU researcher’s academic article among top cited

An academic article published by Prof Teboho Mosikari, an academic from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Economic Sciences, is among the top-cited articles by Wiley, a multinational publishing company that specialises in academic publishing and instructional materials.

The article titled “CO2 emissions, urban population, energy consumption and economic growth in selected African countries: A Panel Smooth Transition Regression (PSTR)”, was published in conjunction with Prof Joel Hinaunye Eita in 2020.

This study investigated the non-linear impact of urban population, energy consumption and economic growth on carbon emissions in selected African economies.

Prof Mosikari says there has been a growing and unprecedented sign of global warming over the years.

“Global warming is generally defined as the climate change caused by a rise in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This suggests that an understanding of socio-economic factors driving greenhouse gases is very important from a policy stance,” he adds.

He says they found that energy consumption has a positive impact on carbon emissions in both regimes.

“The implication of these findings is that policymakers in African countries should come up with policies that curb energy production from fossil and non-renewable resources. This paper suggests that industries and households in African countries should invest more in energy sources that are environmentally friendly.”
