When it comes to university athletics, the North-West University (NWU) is ranked as South Africa’s top track and field contender. During the recent USSA Athletics Championship that took place at the DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg, the NWU took top honours with a medal tally of 33 (13 gold, 13 silver and seven bronze medals).
The University of Johannesburg finished in second position with 25 medals, followed by the University of the Free State with 24 medals.
The gold medallists were:
- Cynthia Tsetsewa: Women senior 400 m hurdles
- Mpho Links: Men senior high jump
- Rantso Mokopane: Men senior 5 000 m
- NWU Relay team (x4): Women senior 4x400 m relay
- NWU Relay team (x4): Men senior 4x400 m relay
- Chederick van Wyk: Men senior 200 m
- Marga Cumming: Women senior hammer
