More than 100 enthusiastic North-West University (NWU) students and Ikageng community members attended the recent Recycled Material Workshop that was held on the campus in Potchefstroom.
The free workshop aimed to empower attendees and by teaching them skills to repurpose recyclable materials. The workshop participants crafted facemasks and plastic flowers, among other things.
Robin Opperman from Umcebo Designs, who is an expert in this field, was the facilitator at the workshop.
“I am absolutely delighted to see the university going the extra mile when it comes to art education and teaching the youth the importance of recycling. One can see that the NWU is making an effort when it comes to informing the community about going green,” says Robin.
When asked about what he learned at the workshop, Sammy Jumat who is currently studying education at the NWU says: “I tend to get very emotional when talking about art, because it is so close to my heart. I learned that when it comes to my creativity I should not limit and rush myself and that anything and everything can be used to create a masterpiece.”
