NWU postdoctoral fellow is one of 2018’s Most Influential Young Africans

Dr Musawenkosi Donia Saurombe, a postdoctoral fellow and researcher on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Mahikeng, was announced as one of the 100 Most Influential Young Africans by African Youth Awards on 4 September 2018.

The annual prestigious list was launched in 2016 and is currently in its third year. It features young politicians, activists, entrepreneurs, entertainers, digital influencers, philanthropists and athletes across 10 categories who are blazing various trails and promoting the positive image of Africa across the globe.

Dr Saurombe made the list along with other influential young people from 26 countries in Africa, with South Africa leading the list with 20 honourees. Other notable South Africans include Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, Casper Nyovest, Bonang Matheba, Mbali Ntuli, Nasty C and Percy Tau.

Dr Saurombe was selected in the category of Personal Development and Academia. In 2017, at the age of 23, she was the youngest female PhD holder in Africa when she graduated with a PhD in industrial psychology from the NWU.

According to Prince Akpah, founding president of Africa Youth Awards, the current list features a record 90 new entrants and 43 females. He says this year’s honourees were listed for their individual and collective contributions towards positioning the image of Africa as frontrunners in their respective fields.

“I was absolutely elated to learn that I had made the cut,” said Dr Saurombe. “I was completely overwhelmed, particularly after seeing the other names on the list and the astounding achievements and influence each person boasts. It is such an honour for me to be recognised alongside the crème de la crème.”
