Staff members from the Faculty of Education have signed-up in numbers to assist on the day and the faculty will also sponsor a medal for each participant. According to Prof Kobus Lombard, deputy dean of the faculty tasked with community engagement, the NWU’s participation forms part of its overarching Mandela Day Champaign.
“As a faculty we would like to make a real impact in our community and what better way to so than to put a smile on a child’s face? We would ultimately like to see this collaboration being sustained over the long-haul and as such the community can be sure of our continued support,” says Prof Lombard.
This year will see 463 children – representative of 10 schools across central South Africa – taking part in several events. These events include: walking with assistance (50m, 80m and 100m), crawling, a wheelchair derby, goal kicking and goal shooting.
Prof Lloyd Conley, executive dean of the Faculty of Education, and Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and operations on the campus in Vanderbijlpark, will also be in attendance on the day and will be, together with the Vanderbijlpark community, cheering on the youngsters from the side lines.
This year marks the 23rd rendition of the event and according to the organisers it promises to be another memorable day. A special word of thanks to the following sponsors:
- Maverick Spur, Three Rivers
- Short Term Trust
- NWU

The programme of the day will commence at 08:30 and all activities will take place at the school, in Vereeniging.
