NWU nursing students to participate in WorldSkills competition

Twelve students from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Nursing will be participating in the provincial leg of the WorldSkills South Africa (WSZA) competition. They will be taking part in the social and personal services discipline.

“The competition will be a hybrid event, with the opening ceremony taking place in KwaZulu Natal (KZN) on 15 February,” says NWU nursing student Boitumelo Melato.

“The KZN competition will be held on 16 February, and the North West leg on 17 and 18 February 2022.”

According to Boitumelo, the best two students from each province will then compete against each other at the WSZA national competition in October. The national competition winners of each discipline will have the opportunity to represent the country at the WorldSkills Africa competition in Swakopmund, Namibia. After that, the winners will compete at the WorldSkills international competition in Shanghai, China.

“We have worked hard to prepare our team for this competition, and we know they will give it their best,” says Tabea Motsilanyane, academic and coordinator at the School of Nursing.

More about the WorldSkills competition

The WSZA competition is both about celebrating the talent of young artisans in South Africa, as well as communicating how key the artisanal sector is to the country’s economy. It offers learners opportunities to gain additional study and work experience, to build their networking and communication skills through taking direction from industry peers, and to benchmark their skills against those they compete with in the industry.

The national competition takes place every three years, and is hosted by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Learners compete in different skills areas, covering the disciplines of construction and building technology; manufacturing and engineering technology; information and communications; social and personal services; creative arts and fashion; and transportation and logistics.
