The North-West University (NWU) Noble Boys emerged victorious against the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in their seventh and final round in the 2018 Varsity Football tournament.
The sizzling goal from NWU right wing jersey number no 21, Banele Hlophe, put an end to UJ’s unbeaten streak in the tournament and leveled the playing field again after UJ thrashed the NWU last year.
The win by the Noble Boys followed recent losses against Wits University, Tshwane University of Technology, and most recently the University of Pretoria. Although the win by NWU was a much-needed relief, it wasn’t enough to secure them a spot in the semi-finals.
“This game was always going to come down to probabilities for us,” said NWU coach, Monde Hlatswayo. “However, I am happy with the focus of the players and the fight that they took to our challenger’s doorstep. It wasn’t easy but through determination ,we were able to emerge victorious.”
“We always go out to win and represent the institution with pride, and this game wasn’t any different. The objective was crystal clear: to get maximum results at home and play for our supporters,” he added.
