The forward-looking strategy of the North-West University (NWU) continues to deliver results. According to the 2026 edition of the outcome-based Global 2000 list by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the NWU ranks in the top 4,1% of universities worldwide. The CWUR published the latest rankings on 1 June.
This year, the NWU is ranked 860th out of 21 291 global universities, securing its place among the top seven universities in South Africa and the top 12 in Africa. The university achieved notable positions of 1 610th for employability and 820th for research, with an overall score of 71,5.
Compared to last year’s results, the NWU has maintained its world ranking of 860th, while showing consistency in employability (1 610th compared to 1 682nd last year) and research (820th compared to the previous 825th place). The overall score of 71,5 reflects an improvement from 71,3 in 2025, underscoring the steady upward trajectory of the NWU.
The strategy of the NWU – Taking the NWU forward: 2024 and beyond – prioritises internationalisation, partnerships and impact. The latest rankings highlight how this approach is bearing fruit, as the university continues to strengthen its reputation locally and internationally.
Recent developments further illustrate the growth trajectory of the NWU. These include the establishment of the NWU Desmond Tutu School of Medicine, the NWU Centre for Sustainable Mining, the NWU Veterinary School, and the Agri- and Artificial Intelligence hubs of the university. These initiatives are designed to expand the reach of the NWU, promote diversity and reinforce operational excellence.
