Kamogelo Mongale, a student at North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, is gearing up to represent the university in karate at the upcoming FISU World University Games in Brazil.

Learning of his selection during the University Sports South Africa competitions, Kamogelo, who is pursuing a BSc in computer sciences and mathematics, was thrilled at the opportunity. "I was excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead," he said, acknowledging the significance of representing his university on the global stage.

A brown belt, Kamogelo reignited his passion for karate at varsity after stepping away from the sport in high school. "My training has become more rigorous, focusing not only on improving my technical skills but also enhancing my physical fitness and mental resilience to ensure I perform at my peak," he explained.

The FISU World University Games is held every two years and is the biggest competition for student athletes. In 2026 there are 20 different sporting events across 17 countries and Brazil will be the host for combat sports in June. "Honestly, it will be my first participation in the FISU Games, and it’s an honour and a blessing," he said. "I am looking forward to the new level of competition and connecting with other student-athletes around the world. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot."

Having admired Brazil’s vibrant culture and lifestyle on TV, the chance to experience it firsthand is a dream come true for Kamogelo. "I only saw Brazil and its amazing culture on screen, but now I’ll be there, and I can’t wait to immerse myself in it," he said.

Kamogelo is determined to make the most of this unforgettable opportunity. "I will give my best among the best athletes from around the world," he said, eager to bring home valuable experiences and further his karate journey.
