NWU-Juta Mock Trial celebrates decade of practical experience for law students

The North-West University (NWU) hosted the 10th annual NWU-Juta Mock Trial competition from 17 to 19 August 2024. The event, which concluded with a final round at the North West High Court, provided second- and third-year law students with the opportunity to apply their legal knowledge in a practical courtroom setting.

The three-day programme included a welcome cocktail function, a finalist announcement dinner, and the final competition.

"The NWU-Juta Mock Trial is one of the highlight events for all law students across our three campuses,” said Dr Neo Morei, executive dean of the Faculty of Law. “It provides an invaluable opportunity for students to harness their legal skills in a competitive yet educational environment."

“The semi-final and final rounds of the competition were presided over by esteemed judges from the North West High Court, offering our students rare exposure to the judiciary at this level," she added.

The judges included acting Judge President Tebogo Djaje, acting Deputy Judge President André Petersen, judge Andrew Reddy, judge Sandiswa Mfenyane, and acting judge AJ Motsatsi.

Based on an excellent team performance, the Mahikeng Campus team emerged as the winners. They are Liso Ngxoza, Liyakhanya Nonkondlo, Mahlodi Mamushi and Tokelo Kgomo.

The Mahikeng Campus also scooped two individual awards – Mahlodi Mamushi received the award for Best Opening Statement, and Ojie Edemudia the award for Best Examination in Chief. Sbusiso Zondo from the Vanderbijlpark Campus received the award for Best Cross-Examination, and Jesse Meyer from the Potchefstroom Campus for Best Closing Argument.

Acting Judge President Djaje said he is proud of the collaboration between the High Court and the NWU. "It is inspiring to see the university's commitment to shaping the next generation of legal professionals."

Prof Tumi Mmusinyane from the Faculty of Law also highlighted the unique relationship between the High Court and the NWU. "It is fortunate that the Faculty of Law has established this close bond with the judiciary; it is a bond that cannot be easily severed or interrupted. The North West High Court has truly established itself as a pioneer in exposing future lawyers to practical law despite its busy schedule. We are indebted to this honourable court, and so we shall continue to be."

He also acknowledged the contributions of acting Judge President Djaje and acting Deputy Judge President Peterson. " We are grateful for the dedication of a full bench of judges lending their time and resources to shape young and upcoming legal minds."
