The North-West University (NWU) turned into a hub of business ideas and exchanges as it hosted the Youth Entrepreneurship Tour (YET) of the Youth African Entrepreneurs Institute (YAEI) on 24 and 25 April 2025.

The two-day event, held in collaboration with the Amalgamated Banks of South Africa (Absa) and Strategic National Stakeholders (SNS), gave young entrepreneurs a stage to pitch business ideas, receive expert feedback and explore pathways to funding.

“The energy in the room was real. You could feel that these young people came here with a purpose,” said Mr Thabo Mokoena, a representative from Absa. “Our role is to support them with the right tools.”

Day 1 focused on the Youth Innovation Challenge, with participants pitching business solutions to a panel of industry professionals. These experts provided insights to strengthen the ideas and offered guidance for future development.

Day 2 focused on business sustainability and financial management. Panel discussions and masterclasses addressed common challenges faced by young entrepreneurs. Networking sessions created links between aspiring founders and potential partners or mentors.

“The event showed us what is possible when young people are given the space to think and speak for themselves,” said Lerato Molefe, a participant from Rustenburg. “This platform made me realise my idea has value.”

The YAEI committee announced the top ten ideas they found most promising, noting the importance of innovation and commitment from the youth.

“We want this platform to open doors,” said YAEI programme director Sipho Dlamini. “If we build strong, youth-led businesses, we change the economic landscape.”

The NWU’s involvement highlighted its focus on developing future leaders through community-based engagement and support.
