The North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Mahikeng will be hosting the 2018 University Sports South Africa (USSA) national boxing tournament from 2 to 5 July 2018 at the campus’ Great Hall.
Approximately 120 competitors from nine universities across the country will participate in the tournament, with at least 20 representing the NWU.
The tournament will showcase South African boxing talent, including those who have participated at national level, of whom three are from the NWU.
Among the expected professional boxers to grace this tournament is newly crowned Gauteng cruiserweight champion, Akani “Prime” Phuzi.
“The last time we hosted the USSA boxing tournament was in 2008,” said Onalenna Tsae, the NWU boxing team coach. “Hosting this tournament means a lot to the NWU and the Mahikeng community as it contributes to the growth of the sport in the province. It’s also a good platform for us as NWU boxing team to showcase why we are considered to be one of the best teams in the sport.”
