Next Thursday, 27 July 2017, will see the start of one of the most anticipated football tournaments yet. The 2017 Varsity football season will kick-off with the North-West University (NWU) taking on the University of Fort Hare in an away game hosted at Fort Hare’s Davidson Stadium in Alice in the Eastern Cape.
Having qualified for this year’s varsity football tournament, the NWU football team is firing on all cylinders since recently walking away with the Team of the Tournament award at the 2017 University Sports South Africa (USSA) championships.
Ahead of the team’s first match, and as part of their send-off to face the University of Fort Hare, the NWU will host an activation campaign at the campus in Mahikeng on 24 July 2017 to drum up support for the NWU football team.
Having made it to the semi-finals in the 2016 Varsity Football tournament, and currently ranking fifth on the 2017 tournament log, the NWU team is set to deliver a spectacular performance. This year they seek to redeem their glory and aim to once again be at the top of the league.
“We are playing very good football at the moment. The players are motivated and hungry for the opportunity to redeem their glory and take the number one spot, more so after walking away with the team of the tournament accolade at the recent 2017 USSAs,” says NWU team manager, Vuyolwethu Sambo. “Remember, this is the team that has seen the likes of Thabo Mnyamane and many like him hone their football skills, and now they are excelling on the national stage. We are ready.”
Kick-off at the University of Fort Hare’s Davidson Stadium is set for 18:30 on 27 July 2017.
The NWU’s football team is ready for the Varsity Cup.
