Student radio talent stood tall at the 2025 North West Media Awards, where NWU FM, the radio station of the North-West University (NWU), won major categories and reaffirmed its status as one of the province’s leading community radio stations.
From best station to top presenter, producer, programme and social media influencer, the student-driven team collected top honours across the board.
The station walked away with the prestigious Community Radio Station of the Year award, cementing its influence within the North West’s competitive broadcasting space.
Individual excellence also took centre stage with Peculiar Ntehelang named Radio Producer of the Year, Bonolo “Ms Faith” Monaisa winning Radio Presenter of the Year and the flagship show Meso Ya Moribo taking Radio Programme of the Year.
In addition, Roana Grey earned the Social Media Influencer of the Year award, completing the station’s clean sweep in key categories.
Kudos to the team
Station manager Kamo Ledwaba applauded the team for their commitment and professionalism.
These awards are a testament to the hard work and dedication that the presenters have put in. It is tough to balance school and life while still doing radio at an optimal level. The long hours and reworking of show preparations have all led to this,” he said.
Ledwaba added that the collective wins speak to the station’s culture of excellence. “The talented team has been amazing. The best programme, producer, presenter and social media influencer are all from our station, which makes me really proud. I want to acknowledge and thank our team at Student Life [the NWU department responsible for holistic student development] for their contributions and support. This win is for us all.”
Founded in 2021 by veteran journalist Ananias Ndlovu, the North West Media Awards recognise excellence in journalism and media practice. Categories span investigative reporting, sports coverage, photography, broadcasting and community journalism.
For NWU FM, the success achieved at the 2025 North West Media Awards, held on 5 December at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, reinforces the station’s role as a training ground for future media professionals and a dynamic voice in community broadcasting.
