NWU FM, the radio station on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Mahikeng, is collaborating with community radio stations across the North West Province to keep listeners informed and entertained during the national lockdown.
NWU FM station manager Itumeleng Bahetane, says that they are simulcasting shows with content that is specific to their primary target audience.
“The stations we are working with are Modiri FM, Aganang FM, Khaya Cool International online radio, Madibeng FM, Mahikeng FM, NWU River FM 87.6, Village FM, Bodumedi FM, Ratlou FM, BB FM, Kopanong FM, Mmabatho FM and Kgatleng FM,” he says.
According to the latest Broadcast Research Council Radio Audience Measurements NWU FM has 4 000 listeners, with an average of 3 100 daily listeners audio streaming across 32 countries.
Itumeleng says NWU FM’s growth and brand presence are dependent on partnerships with local event organisers and artists.
“We are the only radio partner for Kota Sunday and it has become one of the biggest social gatherings in Mahikeng,” he adds.

Even though its primary listeners are students and young people residing in and around Mahikeng, its unique youthful and urban sound also attracts older listeners between the ages of 27 and 35 and even older.
