NWU Faculty of Humanities honours staff members

The North-West University's (NWU’s) Faculty of Humanities recently hosted its annual Recognition and Celebration Function, an event aimed at honouring support and long-serving staff members.
The event took place onboard the Liquid Lounge boat on the Vaal River, where employees were treated to a delicious lunch.

Forty-eight staff members from all three campuses attended the event, which also provided them the opportunity to catch up and network.

The occasion also saw senior administration officer Florence Kgokane honoured for being the longest-serving staff member in the faculty. Florence has been with the university for 20 years.

The Recognition and Celebration event was first introduced in 2020 for academic staff members and researchers under three categories: Teaching and Learning, Research, and Innovation and Unique Community Engagement Projects. However, event organiser Dr Jani Van der Vyver says the faculty felt it needed a dedicated event that only focused on support staff members.

"Support staff members play a vital role within the faculty and are sometimes overlooked. So last year we started the initiative to celebrate them during Secretaries Day,” she adds.

Prof Dumi Moyo, executive dean of the faculty delivered the keynote address and said the faculty decided to host an inter-campus event so that different colleagues could get to know one another.

"We want to thank our support staff members for their hard work and dedication and celebrate their valuable contributions.

“We also want you to form lasting relationships and to get to know one another by living the NWU values and striving towards an ethic of care. As a professor told me once - it is easier to oversee a mistake if you know someone," he added.

Prof Moyo said the event will rotate among the campuses each year, and next year’s function will be hosted in Mahikeng.
