On 5 March 2018 the subject group German in the School of Languages on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Potchefstroom celebrated a group of students who successfully completed their Goethe-Institut examination.
The Goethe-Institut is a German cultural institute, active worldwide, that promotes the study of German abroad and encourages international cultural exchange. Individuals that participate in these exams include students of the subject group German, students of any other field of study at the NWU, lecturers as well as members of the public that require confirmation of their language skills in German.
The individuals who received their certificates passed examinations of the institute on the language skills levels from B1, B2 and C1. These are a prerequisite for a variety of bursaries or admission to the German tertiary education landscape.
Prof Christa Rautenbach (C1), Valentim Dreyer Duarte (C1), Juanita Panther (B2), Renera Louwrens (B2), Heinrich Dittrich (B1), Esté Mathee (B2), Bianca Sass (C1), Natalia Ouspenska (B1) and Ruan Bruwer (B1) successfully completed the Goethe-Institut examination.
Prof Tobie van Dyk, deputy director of the School of Languages, congratulated the group with their newly acquired international qualifications, stressing the importance of international language skills and how it should be used to promote society.
The subject group German has been a licensed test centre of the Goethe-Institut since 2014. The lecturers, Gerda Wittman (subject group chairperson) and Dr Philip van der Merwe are trained examiners for the levels B1-C1. They are qualified to oversee the examinations of the Goethe-Institut for these levels internationally.
