In a thrilling showdown at the Davidson Stadium in the Eastern Cape, the North-West University (NWU) Eagles soared to victory, securing their place in the 2023 Varsity Football semi-finals.
The Eagles managed to conquer the University of Fort Hare (UFH) with a hard-fought 2-1 win on the home turf of UFH.
The game began with both teams displaying aggressive intent, fiercely contesting every inch of the pitch. A high-paced passing game and a quest for open spaces characterised the early minutes of the match. The intensity was palpable, as indicated by the number of yellow cards issued in the early stages.
In the first minute of the first half, the NWU's Reatlegile Kgosithebe found the back of the net with a precise tap-in, thanks to a quality cross from Heaven Sereetsi. This early goal gave the NWU a 1-0 lead at halftime.
As the second half commenced, UFH upped their game by swiftly moving the ball to their striker, Sinobom Kapase. The visitors attempted to slow down the pace to disrupt UFH's momentum, but the home team was resolute. Sinobom, displaying a moment of brilliance, fired a stunning shot into the net 15 minutes into the second half, equalising for the home team.
However, the NWU’s Reatlegile emerged as the hero of the match, securing his second goal with a powerful strike. He executed a fantastic turn between two UFH defenders and confidently placed the ball in the back of the net, ensuring victory for the NWU.
NWU captain Kanalelo Motsoeneng expressed his satisfaction with the away win against UFH. He emphasised the team's focus on their upcoming clash against the University of Johannesburg (UJ), and acknowledged the challenges of playing against UJ on their home turf. Nevertheless, Motsoeneng stressed that the boys are motivated and prepared to fight for a spot in the final.
“With the next two games being knockout matches, anything is possible,” said Kananelo.
The NWU Eagles are now gearing up to face the 2023 log leaders, UJ, in the semi-final encounter scheduled to take place at the UJ Stadium on 14 September.
