With the Varsity Football tournament starting on 21 July 2022, North-West University (NWU) coach Karabo Masehela says the NWU Eagles are ready to take flight in this year’s tournament.
Back in 2019, the NWU Eagles made history by lifting the cup for the first time, and while they were performing well in 2021, they never quite reached the heights expected of them as defending champions.
“The boys are really excited about the upcoming Varsity Football tournament and are physically and mentally ready to take the lead,” he says.
Karabo believes that every player on his team is eager to showcase his talent, and that a different purple army awaits this season.
“They have worked really hard, and it is just a matter of implementing and executing what they’ve learned to achieve great results.
“With supporters now allowed in stadiums, we can also count on our ever-supportive purple army fans, who have always rallied behind the team,” adds Karabo.
He says his team is fortunate to have the experience of players such as Tshepiso Mahlangu, Adam Fynn, Lesiba Mahlong and team captain Kanalelo Motsoeneng.
“These four players have played in the previous two Varsity Football tournaments, so they bring invaluable experience to the whole Eagles team.”
NWU team captain Kananelo says their team spirit is at an all-time high.
“After losing in the semi-finals of the ABC Motsepe playoffs, the boys are now prepared to win this for their loyal fans,” says Kananelo.
The NWU Eagles’ first game will be against Wits University at the Wits Stadium on 21 July 2022.
