NWU Eagles ready to defend Varsity Football title

With the Varsity Football tournament starting soon, the North-West University (NWU) team and reigning champions are ready to defend the title.

Coach Karabo Masehela says he is confident that his team is 100% ready.

“We know as the current champions that every team will be going all out for us, so we are saying to them, bring it on! I have been working with some exciting talent, and we are more than ready,” he says.

NWU Eagles captain Kanalelo Motsoeneng says his teammates are excited to participate in the Varsity Football tournament again.

“The players are ready to fight to retain the cup. Our aim is to go out there, do the right things and not to put ourselves under too much pressure,” he adds.

The eighth edition of the Varsity Football tournament will take place from 8 September to 4 October 2021 at the University of Pretoria.

This year’s format will vary from previous events. This season, the tournament will take place in a centralised, modified, and controlled bio-bubble to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

Since no spectators are allowed, Varsity Football has arranged with SuperSport to televise more games.

Coach Masehela says the fact that the venue is in Pretoria will not have much of an effect on his team, as his boys tend to play better in away games than in home games.

“We will however miss our passionate fans and their support” he says.

The NWU Eagles won the 2019 Varsity Football tournament against the Tswane University of Technology at the NWU sportsground in Mahikeng. The 2020 tournament was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Catch the NWU Eagles in action in round one of the 2021 tournament on 8 September at 18:00 on SuperSport channel 5. They will be taking on the University of Johannesburg.
