NWU Eagles prepare for crucial semi-final clash

As the 2023 Men's Varsity Football competition reaches its pinnacle, the North-West University (NWU) Eagles are gearing up for a crucial showdown against the log leaders, the University of Johannesburg (UJ), in the first semi-final.

The highly anticipated match is set to take place at the UJ Soweto Stadium in Johannesburg on 14 September.

The NWU Eagles, currently holding the fourth position on the league table, have had a season marked by ups and downs. With seven matches played, they secured three wins, and two draws, and suffered two losses.

Coach Amos Xabanisa is confident about his team's readiness for this high-stakes encounter, and emphasises that thorough preparations have been underway. “One notable aspect is the absence of any reported injuries affecting the squad, providing a positive outlook for the upcoming match.”

While UJ has remained undefeated throughout the tournament, coach Xabanisa is undaunted by their achievements. He says that past results should not influence the upcoming match, and that it is important to approach the game with a fresh perspective.

“The team has meticulously crafted a game plan after extensive analysis and scouting of UJ. We are aware of their strengths and weaknesses, which will play a crucial role in our strategy. Execution will be key to our success and I am confident that the boys are prepared to implement our game plan effectively,” says coach Xabanisa.

Captain Kananelo Motsoeneng echoes the coach’s confidence, and says the team is determined and in high spirits.

Even though UJ has not lost a game in the 2023 Varsity Football championship, he confirms the NWU Eagles' unwavering commitment to securing victory.

"With the next two games being knockout matches, anything is possible.”
