The North-West University (NWU) Eagles have ended another impressive Varsity Netball campaign after reaching the final for the second consecutive year, underlining their place among the leading teams in the competition.

The defending champions fell 56–44 to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the 2026 final at the Great Hall on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus on Monday, 28 September. While the result ended the hopes of the NWU of retaining the crown, reaching another final capped a campaign marked by determination, resilience and consistency.

It was also a special occasion for the Mahikeng Campus, which hosted its first Varsity Netball match of the season. Supporters packed the Great Hall to rally behind the Eagles as they attempted to defend the title they won in 2025.

UJ started strongly and put the NWU under early pressure. The visitors led 14–11 after the first quarter.

The Eagles responded in a physical second quarter, with both teams competing fiercely around the shooting circles. The NWU stayed within three goals of UJ at half-time, with the visitors leading 27–24.

The third quarter changed the complexion of the contest. Strong defensive pressure from UJ disrupted the attacking rhythm of the NWU and forced mistakes. UJ capitalised on the turnovers and extended their advantage to 46–30.

The NWU refused to surrender in the final quarter and continued searching for a way back into the contest. However, UJ kept the Eagles wide in attack and converted their opportunities to secure the 56–44 victory and their maiden Varsity Netball title.

For the NWU, the defeat does not erase the achievements of another successful season.

The Eagles entered the competition as defending champions, navigated another demanding campaign and reached a second successive final. They also brought the biggest match of the season to Mahikeng, giving the campus community an opportunity to rally behind the team on home soil.

Although the trophy changed hands, the journey of the NWU to another final provides a strong foundation as the Eagles look towards the next chapter.
