The North-West University (NWU) Eagles crushed the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) by 3-0 in the seventh and final round-robin Varsity Football game at the NWU’s Mahikeng Stadium on Thursday, 8 September 2022.
In the 21st minute of the game, the NWU Eagles opened the scoring thanks to Omphile Shuping who netted with a long-range left-foot shot.
VUT had a double chance to equalize just before the break, but the first attempt following a corner shot hit the post before NWU goalkeeper Luzuko Jevuka denied VUT on the rebound.
The NWU Eagles remained on top for large parts of the match and eventually scored the second goal in the 80th minute with a superb long-range shot by Reatlegile Kgosithebe.
Omphile completed his brace in the 83rd minute following a quick counterattack by the Eagles.
Omphile 'The General’ was undoubtedly the NWU's best player of the day and was announced man of the match.
NWU coach Karabo Masehela says he is happy with the performance of his boys.
“A good game, good results and good energy from the boys.
“Last week was a free week, which gave the boys some time to rest, and it really made a difference – they are rejuvenated,” says coach Masehela.
The NWU is now set to meet the current Varsity Football champions, the University of Johannesburg (UJ), in the semi-finals on 15 September 2022 at UJ’s Soweto Campus.
NWU Eagle Omphile Shuping’s creativity and skills earned him the man of the match prize.
