The North-West University (NWU) Eagles secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Central University of Technology (CUT) in their fifth Varsity Football match held in Bloemfontein on 22 August 2024.

The match started with an early breakthrough for the NWU, as Molemo Kukame found the back of the net in just the second minute. The NWU maintained their momentum, and in the 35th minute, Momelezi Mngati doubled the lead, taking the score to 2-0. The teams went into halftime with the NWU firmly in control.

The second half saw the NWU continue to dominate, with Molemo scoring his second goal of the match in the 65th minute, sealing a 3-0 win for the purple army.

NWU coach Nkululeko Malgas expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance. "This win means with each match our dream is coming closer to reality," he said.

"We have two tough games ahead, with Vaal University of Technology aiming for a semi-final spot. One of their coaches mentioned that their target this season is to qualify for the semis. The Durban University of Technology will also be a challenge, as they will be playing for their pride, but we have to dig deep."

Reflecting on the season so far, coach Malgas added, "We opened match day one with a loss against the University of Free State, so we need to close the group stages on a positive note. We also need to reward our loyal fans with maximum points at home. They have always been behind the boys."

The NWU’s strong defensive record has been a key factor in their success. After conceding three goals in their opening match, they have managed to keep clean sheets in four consecutive games. This solid defence has helped the NWU climb to third place on the Varsity Football log, with only goal difference separating them from the top two teams.

The Eagles are now focused on their remaining fixtures as they aim to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
