The Mahikeng chapter of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Debating Union recently hosted a one-day hybrid dialogue session on financial literacy and workplace readiness.

According to Boitumelo Malatji, president of the Debating Union, the union aims to foster meaningful conversations that are of value to the student community. "We want our members and the student body as a whole to talk about important matters that will help them in future.”

The event included presentations by the manager of the NWU Career Centre, Thoriso Maseng on work readiness, and “Know Your Cash” team representative Makoma on money management tips.

The Debating Union are currently getting ready for the Southern Africa Universities Debating Championship 2022, which is the second-largest competition in Africa, hosted by the Royalty Pact Debating Academy. They have made it to the semi-finals which will take place together with the final round on 13 August.

“We are optimistic and aim to bring home the first-place title and trophy,” says Kgopotso Sekgobela, secretary of the union.

According to Kgopotso, the union is looking forward to introducing more interesting initiatives such as the NWU Mahikeng Campus Inter-Faculty Spelling Bee competition that is expected to take place in September.
