NWU dancers twirl their way to the top

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) ballroom and Latin dance team on the Mahikeng Campus secured no less than 24 trophies and 14 medals in the South African Dance Federation Championship Super Series that took place at the Springs Civic Centre in Gauteng on 22 April.

More than 30 well-established dance teams participated in the competition, representing community dance studios, as well as university and school teams. Ten couples competed in the Bronze, Silver, Gold Star, Rising Star, and Championship sections of the tournament.

The Mahikeng team won first, second, and third place in almost all of the sections in which they competed, with all team members qualifying for the finals.

“The team did exceptionally well, especially taking into account that this was their first try-out competition with new members who were competing for the very first time. The university was well represented and the team is looking forward to many more victories,” says Prince Gontse Motaung, who is also a competitor. Prince was named Coach of the Year in 2022 by the NWU Sports Department.

He says the team is currently preparing for one of their biggest national championship leagues that will take place on 20 May 2023 in Springs, and will be hosted by the Federation of Dance Sports South Africa.
