On the evening of 8 August, the North-West University (NWU) community gathered at D'vine Venue Hall for the annual Convocation Braai, a vibrant event marked by insightful discussions and a shared vision for the future.
The evening was a testament to the strength and unity of the NWU community, bringing together alumni, staff and students to celebrate the university's achievements and discuss its future direction.
The programme was directed by Tutu Kgobane, a member of the NWU Convocation Executive Committee, who set the tone for an engaging and informative event. The proceedings began with a warm welcome from Bert Sorgdrager, president of the NWU Convocation.
Bert emphasised the importance of the Convocation, urging all present to become members. He provided a brief explanation of the Convocation's role, highlighting its purpose in encouraging a strong connection between the university and its alumni.
Bert also took the opportunity to speak about various NWU flagship programmes. Among the topics he touched upon was the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), where he underscored its critical importance in supporting students' educational journeys.
Prof Daryl Balia, deputy vice-chancellor for information technology and Potchefstroom Campus operations, provided an update on the development projects underway at the NWU. Central to his address was the announcement of the establishment of the NWU Medical School, a landmark project set to be completed in 2028. This development marks a significant milestone in the university's history, as it will further enhance the NWU’s academic offerings and its ability to contribute to the healthcare sector.
Prof Balia shared exciting news about the launch of NWU Enterprises, and proudly announced the recent conferral of honorary doctorates upon three distinguished individuals. They are Rassie Erasmus, renowned for his contributions to South African rugby, Easy Matjila, veteran Setswana broadcaster, and Jannie Oosthuizen, an internationally renowned pharmaceutical business leader.
Following the updates, Prof Fika Janse Van Rensburg, a NWU Convocation Executive Committee member, facilitated a question-and-answer session with attendees expressing their thoughts and ideas on how to continue driving the NWU forward.
Thoriso Maseng, senior manager of Career Services and Alumni Relations, spoke about the ongoing alumni engagement initiatives at the NWU. He emphasised the essential role that alumni play in the university's continued success and growth.
The evening ended on a celebratory note with Bert and Prof Balia cutting the NWU 20-year celebration cake, symbolising two decades of excellence and progress at the NWU. Nkosinathi Tom, deputy president of the Convocation, expressed his gratitude to all attendees for their participation and commitment to the university.
