The Big Lapa at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus came alive with energy, emotion and shared memories as members of the NWU Convocation gathered for the NWU Convocation Braai.
The event, a brainchild of NWU Convocation president Tutu Kgobane, brought Convocation members from different generations together for an evening dedicated to reconnecting, reflecting on their journeys and strengthening lifelong ties with the university community.
The gathering was marked by a powerful sense of belonging as Convocation members returned to their alma mater, not only to relive memories, but also to celebrate personal growth, professional achievements and the enduring bond that continues to connect them to the institution. It became more than a social gathering – it was a reminder of shared history, collective identity and the ongoing responsibility to contribute to the future of the university.
The programme, directed by Prof. Leenta Grobler from the Faculty of Health Sciences, was carefully designed to blend inspiration, entertainment and engagement, ensuring a memorable and meaningful experience for all attendees.
In his opening and welcoming address, Tutu encouraged Convocation members to remain active ambassadors of the institution.
“Universities are not only defined by those who study at them, but by the graduates who carry their values into the world. The members of our Convocation remain an important part of the NWU story, and their success continues to strengthen the legacy of this institution,” he said.
Guests also received an update on institutional progress from Prof. Jeffery Mphahlele, deputy vice-chancellor for research, innovation, community engagement, postgraduate studies with the assigned function of the Vanderbijlpark Campus. He highlighted developments in research, innovation and community engagement, emphasising the commitment of the university to producing knowledge that responds to societal needs.
The importance of giving back was reinforced by Silvanus Welcome, director for development and fundraising, who spoke about philanthropy and the role of Convocation members in supporting students through funding, mentorship and long-term engagement with the university.
He encouraged the members of the Convocation to see giving back as a holistic contribution that includes time, expertise and leadership, not only financial support.
Nicolize van der Walt, section head for alumni relations, reflected on the importance of maintaining strong relationships between the university and its Convocation members and creating platforms that ensure they remain connected, involved and informed.
Entertainment throughout the evening added vibrancy and celebration to the programme, creating a lively atmosphere that balanced reflection with joy.
As the formal proceedings concluded, Convocation bursar Mpho Mosia delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all organisers, speakers, Convocation members and guests for their contribution to the success of the event.
The evening ended with networking and dinner, with conversations continuing late into the night as Convocation members strengthened bonds and explored opportunities for future collaboration.
According to organiser Zanele Ngobese, the reunion exceeded expectations and reaffirmed the strength of the NWU community.
“The event was truly a remarkable success and exceeded our expectations in many ways. Seeing Convocation members from different generations coming together, reconnecting after many years and sharing memories of their time at the NWU was incredibly heartwarming,” she said, adding that the atmosphere throughout the evening was filled with excitement, pride and a genuine sense of belonging.
“What made the reunion special was not only the networking and social interaction, but also the conversations about how Convocation members can continue contributing to the growth and development of the university.
“Events like these remind us that being part of the NWU family does not end at graduation. The bond remains strong for years, and this reunion showed the importance of maintaining those relationships, supporting one another and working together to create opportunities for future generations of students. We are grateful to everyone who attended and contributed towards making the evening memorable and meaningful,” said Zaneke.
She further added that the strong turnout, positive energy and meaningful engagement throughout the evening highlighted the growing importance of Convocation relationships in strengthening institutional identity and building a united NWU community across generations.
