NWU Community nursing students assist in Health Promotion

Staff members at the School of Nursing Science, North-West University (NWU), Potchefstroom Campus have a close relationship with the Mother and Child health Coordinators Sr. Petro Swanepoel (Tlokwe sub-district) and Sr. Miemie van Jaarsveld (Matlosana sub-district). Part of the curriculum of the second year community nursing students’ includes health promotion and the management of sick children..

As an assignment based on the Work Integrated Learning principle, the students prepared various posters on topics such as hand hygiene, exercise and healthy food etc. as well as childhood illnesses based on the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) manual of the Department of Health.

The students supplied information for all members of the community to understand. All the posters made by the students were donated to the Department of Health to be placed in health facilities. “We want to thank the second year community nursing students for their hard work and assisting in making a change in our community by promoting health through the development of these posters” said Dr Tinda Rabie, Senior lecturer: Community Nursing Science and Primary Health Care
