The North-West University is on the shortlist for two global awards and another one focusing on Africa in this year’s Excellence Awards of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
Two lecturers in the Management Accountancy honours programme in the School of Accounting Sciences are also finalists for the Teaching Excellence Award.
The first category is the CIMA Campus Culture Excellence Award, which recognises academics, faculties and student bodies that have launched successful campaigns to create awareness and promote the CIMA professional qualification on their campuses.
The second is the Employability Excellence Award, which recognises academic partners who actively promote employer involvement and engagement between CIMA students and industry partners in the profession. The NWU’s Management Accounting honours programme is a finalist for the field trip for CIMA students to Impala Platinum.
Ms Brenda Harmzen of the Vanderbijlpark Campus and Prof Sanlie Middelberg of the Potchefstroom Campus were nominated by their students and they are finalists for the Teaching Excellence Award. This award recognises a CIMA subject lecturer who has demonstrated excellent engagement with CIMA students and effectively helped them to enhance their understanding of the subject taught.
Prof Heleen Janse van Vuuren, director of the School of Accounting Sciences, says she is very proud of Brenda and Sanlie, and of the whole team who are working so hard to make the CIMA programme outstanding.
CIMA is the world’s largest professional body of management accountants. The winners will be announced on 11 December during a virtual event.
