The Varsity Netball team of the North-West University (NWU) is back to its winning ways after making mincemeat of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre in Stellenbosch. The NWU beat the UWC 60-38.
It was a welcome return to form for coach Elsunet du Plessis’ team, after a disappointing 54-38 loss to Stellenbosch University on the latter’s home turf. Although it was a disappointing start to their Varsity Netball campaign, the NWU has shown time and again that they are one of the forces to be reckoned with in this prestigious tournament.
The NWU led 34-16 at halftime, and their five goals in the first power play proved invaluable. After having wrapped up the bonus point for scoring 50 points or more, the game was in the bag with the rest of the encounter being a mere formality.
The NWU’s Londeka Buthelezi shone brightly and was named the FNB Player of the Match.
The NWU’s next square-off will be against the University of Johannesburg on 8 September at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein. Thereafter they will be taking on the University of the Free State at the same venue the following evening.
A week later the NWU will take on the Tswane University of Technology, followed by the University of Pretoria. They will be finishing the group stages of the competition against the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth.
