NWU anthem team awarded Chancellor’s medal

In June 2011, the North-West University (NWU) adopted its second university anthem, Bless us oh Lord”. On Friday, 5 June 2026, the university awarded the Chancellor’s medal to the group of people responsible for composing and translating this anthem.

The team included members from the well-known South African acapella boy-band, Flip a Coin. This anthem has become an important part of the NWU's legacy, and these individuals played an integral role in establishing and promoting the revised NWU vision and mission.

This team is regarded as ambassadors of the NWU, and their lives are a testament to how NWU alumni can positively impact society through an ethic of care advocating for inclusivity and equality within diverse spheres. The team consists of:

  • Johan C Venter
  • Katlego Maboe
  • Michael de Villiers
  • Corneels Schabort
  • Theriso Tsambo
  • Stefan Pretorius
  • Niekie van der Walt, and
  • Christa Steyn (posthumously)
