NWU and Taletso TVET College strengthen ties through strategic engagement

A North-West University (NWU) delegation, led by the deputy vice-chancellor for student life, transformation, people and culture with assigned function of the Mahikeng Campus, Dr Joe Molete, recently held a strategic engagement with the leadership of the Taletso TVET College.

This engagement was aimed at strengthening institutional relations and exploring collaborative opportunities between the two institutions.

The Taletso TVET College delegation was led by the principal, Mr MZ Nkomo, and the deputy principal for Academic Affairs, Mr P Nkau.

The meeting served a dual purpose, firstly as a meet-and-greet engagement between the leadership of the two institutions, and secondly as a strategic discussion focused on building partnerships that will contribute meaningfully to education, innovation and community development in North West.

The engagement reflected a shared commitment by both institutions to work together as leading knowledge hubs in the province and to create collaborative initiatives that positively impact students and surrounding communities.

Among the key issues discussed was the importance of research collaboration between the NWU and the Taletso TVET College. Both institutions emphasised the need to develop research initiatives that respond directly to societal challenges and contribute towards sustainable community development.

The meeting also explored the establishment of an entrepreneurship hub that would benefit students from both institutions, while simultaneously empowering communities in Mahikeng and across the province through innovation, skills development and enterprise support.

Student support and inclusivity also featured prominently during discussions, particularly around issues affecting students living with disabilities. The institutions highlighted the importance of creating accessible and supportive learning environments that promote equal opportunities for all students.

Another area of collaboration discussed was the strengthening of library and academic resource partnerships to improve access to information, research support and learning materials for students and staff.

As part of the outcomes of the engagement, both institutions agreed on the importance of establishing a steering committee that will meet quarterly to drive collaboration, monitor progress and ensure the implementation of strategic initiatives between the NWU and the Taletso TVET College.

The proposed steering committee is expected to play a key role in positioning both institutions as drivers of knowledge, innovation and socio-economic development in North West.

Speaking during the engagement, Dr Molete highlighted the importance of collaboration in the higher education sector.

“As institutions of higher learning, we have a collective responsibility to work together in addressing the socio-economic challenges facing our communities. Through collaboration, innovation and shared expertise, we can create opportunities that empower students and contribute meaningfully to the development of North West,” said Dr Molete.

He added that the partnership between the NWU and the Taletso TVET College has the potential to create a lasting impact beyond the classroom.

“This engagement is not only about strengthening institutional relations, but about ensuring that our institutions become catalysts for transformation, entrepreneurship, research innovation and community development,” he said.

The Taletso TVET College principal, Mr Nkomo, welcomed the engagement and described it as an important step towards building meaningful institutional partnerships.

“We appreciate the opportunity to engage with the leadership of the NWU. Collaboration between institutions is critical in ensuring that we respond effectively to the educational and developmental needs of our communities,” said Mr Nkomo.

He further emphasised the importance of aligning efforts to benefit students and society.

“Our institutions share a common responsibility to equip young people with knowledge, skills and opportunities that will enable them to contribute positively to society. Through this partnership, we believe we can strengthen innovation, student support and community impact,” he added.

The meeting marked the beginning of what both institutions described as a promising partnership built on mutual respect, a shared vision and a collective commitment to advancing education and development in the province.
