In the spirit of International Nelson Mandela Day, the North-West University (NWU) Alumni and Stakeholder Relations office joined forces with the office of Prof Sonia Swanepoel, the deputy vice-chancellor for community engagement and Mahikeng Campus operations.
They donated 300 sanitary towels to the GoAllOut organisation which is managed by various NWU alumni.
GoAllOut focuses on giving back to the community, and especially the youth. Through its “Pad the Way” project, the organisation has been collecting sanitary towels to distribute in the communities they serve.
This latest donation was distributed among underprivileged girls in the Mahikeng community.
Motuba High School in the Matshepe village was one of the beneficiaries, where learners received sanitary towels and NWU-branded pencil cases.
Prof Ushotanefe Useh, director of the NWU research niche area Lifestyle Diseases, handed over the donation to Thabang Ramabodu, NWU alumnus and GoAllOut's head of campaigns.
“We are proud of everything the team is doing, and encourage them to continue the good work,” said Thabang.
Nicolize van der Walt, section head of the Alumni Office, said she was proud to see that our alumni are caring people who look after their communities.
“It is so important to keep our female learners in school. It is a pity that some girls still have to stay home because there is no money for personal hygiene products.
“We should strive to serve others, and the NWU Alumni office will always try and support our alumni who are involved in charitable projects to empower and support others.”
