The Department of Arts, Culture, Sports, and Recreation, in collaboration with the North West Sports Confederation, recently honoured North-West University (NWU) alumnus Keorapetse Mashimo for his contribution to sport.
He was announced the Sports Volunteer of the Year as well as Sports Administrator of the Year during the North West Sports awards that took place on 24 February at Sun City.
Keorapetse was recognised for his hard work and dedication in the field of boxing in particular.
He says he received the Sports Volunteer of the Year award for managing the launch of various boxing clubs in North West in 2022.As the youngest nationally qualified boxing referee, he has also trained a number of referees and judges.
“My other role is to administer sports at a local level. Besides being the secretary of the Mahikeng Local Sports Confederation, I launched the Moshawane Cycling Club in 2022, which was announced the Recreational Sporting Code of the Year,” he adds.
“I served as the provincial Boxing Federation’s spokesperson from 2018 to 2022, and in 2022 I was elected as secretary-general, responsible for administering the affairs of the sport and representing the province in the National Council.”
In 2022 he was inaugurated as representative of the North West Sports Academy Commission Federations, where he represents all the sporting codes in the Sports Academy Commission.
Keorapetse says his interest in boxing really took off after he was selected as team manager of the NWU Boxing Club in 2017. Later that year he was elected as chairperson of the NWU Boxing Club.
Besides being a teacher by profession, Mashimo is also an accredited boxing referee and training to be a judge.
In 2022 he was also selected as one of the 100 South African Shining Stars by Inside Education for his contribution to sport in his community.
“These awards motivate me to keep on promoting, enhancing and developing sports,” adds Keorapetse.
