NWU alumnus appointed Consul-General

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Dr Bobby Moroe has been appointed Consul-General of South Africa in Lagos, Nigeria. Dr Moroe assumed this new assignment on 5 September 2022, and will be responsible for nine of the 36 states in Nigeria.

As head of the South African consulate in Lagos, he will be responsible for promoting trade and investment opportunities for South African businesses in Nigeria, and to encourage the same for Nigerian companies in South Africa.

Furthermore, to promote social cohesion between South Africans and Nigerians, Dr Moroe will – through arts and culture projects – promote the film industries of both countries and establish friendship clubs between the people of South Africa and Nigeria, while providing consular services for South Africans in distress in Nigeria. He will also work with the relevant ministries to fast-track projects which will benefit the members of the South Africa Nigeria Youth Dialogue.

Before this appointment, Dr Moroe was South Africa’s deputy high commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria since 2017.

“Not only does this appointment afford me the opportunity to work on the projects that I have started in my previous position, but it will also help to identify other new areas in various sectors. These sectors include banking, aviation, insurance, tax start-up, technology start-ups, health, tourism, and infrastructure development,” he says.

“It is important for South Africa and Nigeria to work together because of their stature in global politics. As a result, countries on the continent rely on them to advance mutual interests and benefits,” he adds.

“We will be starting engagement with universities in South Africa for possible collaboration with Nigerian institutions of higher learning, particularly between the NWU and University of Lagos.”
